point-of-service plan

A point of service (POS) plan is a managed care plan with multiple options that are available to the member with no provider selection required until the time of service. Typically, a three-tier service cost approach is used whereby the member can elect the highest option (HMO), the mid option (PPO), or the traditional option (includes out of network and non-par) with higher out-of -pocket expense to the member.
